چکیده

A new approach is proposed for quantifying the degree of articulator movement within a phoneme as a single scalar value, using vocal tract images captured using dynamic MRI. This indicates the degree of physical movement of the articulators involved in speech production, rather than the acoustic consequences of that movement. We go on to show that this is a valid method for characterising the overall dynamics of the vocal tract, by demonstrating a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.61 between it and a similarly-defined scalar measure of the acoustic dynamics of the signal. The calculation of the new measure involves production of images showing the exact location of any movement within the vocal tract, and additionally shows this information separately for the initial and final segments of each phoneme. Finally, we demonstrate that although some sounds may involve more movement of the articulators than would be expected from the dynamics of the acoustic signal, it is rare for the degree of articulation derived from the MRI data to be significantly less than expected.

Virtual articulator for the analysis of dental occlusion: An update

The future of dental practice is closely linked to the utilization of computer-based technology, specifically virtual reality, which allows the dental surgeon to simulate true life situations in patients. The virtual articulator has been designed for the exhaustive analysis of static and dynamic occlusion, with the purpose of substituting mechanical articulators and avoiding their errors. These...

Articulator movement associated with the development of prosodic control in children.

This study explored the relationship between articulator movement and prosody in children at different developmental ages. Jaw, lower lip, and upper lip kinematics were examined in 4-, 7-, and 11-year-old children as they produced the declarative and interrogative forms of utterances "Show Bob a bot" and "Show Pop a pot." Articulator movement differences were found between declaratives and inte...

Test-retest repeatability of human speech biomarkers from static and real-time dynamic magnetic resonance imaging.

Static anatomical and real-time dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (RT-MRI) of the upper airway is a valuable method for studying speech production in research and clinical settings. The test-retest repeatability of quantitative imaging biomarkers is an important parameter, since it limits the effect sizes and intragroup differences that can be studied. Therefore, this study aims to present a f...
